Ducks, Ray Emery subdue Flames, 4-2 | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Ray3Ray Emery’sclutch goaltending, an effective power play and a favorable ruling on a debatable play helped the Ducks strengthen their playoff chances with a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Emery improved to 6-0-0 in seven appearances, stopping 23 shots to help the Ducks win for the seventh time in eight games and ninth in their last 10. His work was crucial because earlier in the day All-Star goalieJonas Hilleracknowledged he was again experiencing symptoms of vertigo and isn’t ready to play again.

“I can’t make myself see the puck if I don’t feel comfortable,” Hiller said after the team’s morning skate.

Emery, signed as a free agent on Feb. 7, was steady Wednesday when the Ducks needed him to be. However, he did benefit from a ruling by the NHL’s Toronto operations executives, who said that replays ofTim Jackman’ssecond-period deflection could not conclusively prove that the puck had crossed the goal line after it struck Emery’s glove and so allowed the on-ice call of no goal to stand.

The Ducks vaulted past Nashville and into sixth in the West while severely damaging the Flames’ playoff chances. The Ducks have five games left.

I756i7kfBob Gansler, the coach who led the U.S. back to the World Cup after a 40-year absence, was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Tuesday, along with four players who represented the U.S. in World Cup tournaments between 1990 and 2002.

The players chosen include forward Bruce Murray, of the Gansler-coached 1990 U.S. team that took part in Italia'90, the first appearance by an American side at international soccer's premier event since 1950.

Also named were winger and three-time World Cup star Cobi Jones, the former Galaxy player who holds the record for most men's national team appearances with 164; midfielder Earnie Stewart, Jones' sidekick from the 1994 World Cup team, and defender Eddie Pope, a three-time World Cup player and three-time Major League Soccer champion with D.C. United.

While congratulating those elected, Kevin Payne, D.C. United's president and chief executive officer, Tuesday appealed to voters in future Hall of Fame balloting not to overlook foreign players who have been crucial to the game's development in the U.S.

"I'm disappointed that, once again, {Bolivian midfielder} Marco Etcheverry was not elected to the Hall of Fame," Payne said."Marco was the driving force behind D.C. United during the most dominant era any professional team in our country has enjoyed and he set the standard for his position, which remains unmatched in MLS history.

"I call on the voters, in future, to broaden their perspective and acknowledge the great contributions key foreign-born players have made to MLS and the game in America, and vote them into the Hall of Fame."

Kyle Busch leads NASCAR's Auto Club 400 after 200 miles | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Nascar4_600

The second 100 miles started off pretty much as the first 100 ended -- with green-flag racing. In fact, on lap 65 a record was set for the number of consecutive green-flag laps at the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Auto Club 400 at Fontana.

Around lap 66, the second set of green-flag pit stops started to unfold.Martin Truex Jr.andTony Stewartstayed out a bit longer to pick up points for leading a lap.Jeff Burtonwas penalized for entering pit row too fast, forcing him to re-enter the pits as a penalty.

By lap 70,Kyle Buschwas back in front followed by Truex. At the 150-mile point (75 laps) the first caution of the day was called, allegedly for debris in the third turn.  Of course, with TV watching no doubt reaching mind-numbing proportions, the caution allowed NASCAR to gather the field together and promote more competitive racing.

Every driver but one used the caution as an opportunity to pit. Stewart  elected to stay out with only six laps on his tires. That put him in first place when the green flag was dropped on lap 80.

Stewart teammateRyan Newmanwas next to him on the restart and quickly took his turn at the front of the field, being chased by Kyle Busch and Stewart.

On lap 83, front-row starterDenny Hamlinwas experiencing problems and dropped to the bottom of the track as he and his crew tried to figure out why the car wasn't running right. He elected to stay out on the track.

Stewart moved back into the lead on the 88th lap, followed by Kyle Busch and Newman. Kyle Busch then retook the lead three laps later.

At the halfway mark of the race, 40 of the 43 cars remained on the track, with 26 of them still on the lead lap. Kyle Busch was the leader by less than a second followed by Stewart, Newman,Brian Vickers,Jimmie Johnson, Truex,Kevin Harvick,Mark Martin,Matt KensethandCint Bowyer.

Times guest blogger Hines Ward discusses Week One on 'Dancing With the Stars' | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

HinesThe Times is pleased to have Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward guest-blogging for us while he competes on"Dancing With the Stars." Every Wednesday, Ward, a Super Bowl MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, will answer a few questions from Fabulous Forum editor Houston Mitchell and give some insight into the competition. Here are Ward’s thoughts about Week One, which he offered by e-mail.

Q: Have you ever watched"Dancing With the Stars" before this season?

A.I have.  I have watched some of those episodes where the athletes have danced.  I have seen Emmitt {Smith} win and watched big Warren Sapp.  It looks easier than it really is being on the show and actually doing it now.  I give those dancers a lot of credit.  Especially all the ladies who have to wear high heels day in and day out.  I don't see how ya'll do it.  But I figured if big Warren Sapp can do it, then I certainly can.  And so far, I am having a blast.

Q: When were you more nervous, before your first Super Bowl or before your dance Monday night?

A.You really can't compare the two.  I mean, being in my first Super Bowl, I can't even describe the feeling.  I just remember thinking about it right before going onto the field for the first time and how nervous I got.  And I definitely got nervous on Monday night before my first dance.  But my partner, Kym Johnson, is a great teacher and she just told me to go for it, so we did.  I approached my preparation for the show the same way I approach my preparation for football.  And I have a great coach for each.  It's just that one is a lot prettier than the other :) but I have mad respect for both.

Q: Who do you think will be your toughest competition on the show?

A.I think all my fellow celebrity dancers are going to be tough competition.  I mean, you take Sugar Ray {Leonard}, for example. He is a world champion and made his living with his hands and his feet.  And he doesn't seem to age at all.  Then there are Kirstie Alley and Ralph Macchio, who both did very well and got better scores than me.  So I mean you really can't count anybody out.  I think everyone is capable of winning the Mirror Ball Trophy.  I think it all comes down to who wants it the most and who works at it the hardest.

NHL: Kings stellar on one end, stalled on the other | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Kings1_400The Kings continue to play exceptionally well on the penalty kill.

And they still can’t buy a goal as they head into the third period against the Calgary Flames in a scoreless game at Staples Center.

The Kings have shut down the Flames on four power plays, running their streak to 33 consecutive penalty kills since giving up a man-advantage goal in the second period against the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 28.

GoaltenderJonathan Quickhas been a big part of that effort tonight. Half of his 14 saves have come on Calgary power plays.

But the Kings were unable to equal Quick's effort offensively.Anze Kopitarhad the best chance in the second period, with the Kings on a power play and Calgary goaltenderMiikka Kiprusoffhaving lost his stick. Kopitar had a clear shot from the blue line but could not put the puck on net.

L.A. Marathon: It's official, Kelly Gneiting sets Guinness World Record as heaviest man to finish | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Kelly Gneiting, a 400-pound sumo wrestler, set a Guinness World Record as the heaviest man to complete a marathon, after finishing on Sunday in 9 hours 48 minutes 52 seconds.

Gneiting weighed 396.2 pounds after the marathon, smashing the past world record of 275 pounds and beating his 2008 marathon time of 11:52:11.

"I'd like to see the Kenyan improve his marathon time by two hours," he joked.

Gneiting jogged the first eight miles and walked the final 18, saying afterward that he lost track of where he was after mile 10 because he felt delirious.

Gneiting said he  realized that he was at mile 15 only because his friend met him there with clean socks.

He finished the 26.2-mile race despite heavy rains and strong winds. For much of the race, he was also forced to obey traffic signals and walk on the sidewalk because he was walking far more slowly than the 13-minute-per-mile-pace used for calculating street reopenings.

"I was really struggling in the last five miles," he said,"but I said to myself,'If I have to crawl, I will.'"

President Obama picks Connecticut to three-peat as women's champion | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Obama_300Taking the same approach he did withhis men's bracket, President Obama picked all four top seeds (Connecticut, Baylor, Stanford and Tennessee) to advance to the Final Four of the NCAA women's tournament.

Obama, who has other things to deal with rather than putting a lot of thought into his tournament brackets, also is going the low-risk route in choosing the eventual winner -- the two-time defending champion Huskies, who have lost just one game since he took office.

The president is picking Baylor to take on the Huskies in the final, which would give the Lady Bears a chance to avenge a one-point loss to Connecticut earlier this season.

It's the second straight year Obama has filled out a women's bracket for ESPN. Last year he correctly chose Connecticut to defeat Stanford in the championship game.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to get title shot June 4 in Los Angeles, promoter Bob Arum says | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

JccJulio Cesar Chavez Jr. will get a middleweight world title shot against Germany'sSebastian Zbikon June 4 at either Dodger Stadium or Staples Center, Chavez's promoter,Bob Arum, said Thursday.

Arum said the card would be a tribute to Chavez's father, the former world champion who is scheduled to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame the next week. Chavez Sr. won his first world title at Los Angeles' Olympic Auditorium.

The promoter met with Dodger Stadium officials Tuesday and discussed a plan to place the boxing ring in right-center field, with seating for as many as 30,000 fans and tickets priced between $25 and $300. Arum said he expected a decision by stadium authorities by next week.

"It was an excellent meeting, and the card will be beefed up tremendously," Arum said.

Chavez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) fought Jan. 29 after pulling out of a December card at Honda Center due to sickness. In Zbik (30-0, 10 KOs), he'll meet a fighter making his U.S. debut after a slew of German dates, including a July interim WBC title bout againstJorge Sebastian Heiland. The belt was then given to Zbik when it was taken fromSergio Martinez

Arum said he planned to put new world lightweight championBrandon Rios' first title defense on the Los Angeles card, and was working to get NFL playerTommy Zbikowskiand former world championRafael Marquez in the ring, too.

USC football: Mitch Mustain is offered pre-file diversion program | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Former USC quarterbackMitch Mustain, who was arrested last month on suspicion of selling prescription narcotics, will not face misdemeanor charges if he completes a pre-file diversion program, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office said Wednesday.

Mustain, 23, must complete a drug-education program, perform 100 hours of community service and not be involved in another instance with police over the course of one year, city attorney spokesmanFrank Mateljansaid.

Mustain was arrested for allegedly selling Adderall, an amphetamine, to an undercover officer in the San Fernando Valley. But the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office declined to file charges because the substance sold to the undercover officer was"lisdexamfetamine dimesylate," which is not listed as a controlled substance.

County prosecutors sent the case to the city attorney for a possible misdemeanor filing.

Mustain, who is preparing to work out for NFL scouts at USC’s Pro Day on March 30, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Mateljan said the city attorney’s office was still reviewing a case involving former USC defensive linemanEverson Griffen, who was arrested in January after an incident with Los Angeles Police Dept. officers following a traffic stop.

Angels pitcher Hisanori Takahashi deals with survivor's guilt after earthquake in Japan | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Takahashi_400Hisanori Takahashi admits he is experiencing a severe case of survivor's guilt. While his countrymen in Japan are reeling from the effects of a devastating earthquake and tsunami, which killed thousands, wiped out entire towns and has thrown the nation into a nuclear crisis, the veteran left-hander is in spring-training camp with the Angels, enjoying the relative tranquility of Arizona.

"That's what I'm feeling right now," Takahashi said through a translator."Fortunately, I am a survivor, but it hurts, of course. It has definitely been difficult to focus on baseball, but as a baseball player, I have to play baseball."

Takahashi, who signed a two-year, $8-million deal with the Angels in December, has been doing that extremely well so far, allowing no runs and three hits in his five innings of work this spring. But when he's away from the park, the reliever's focus is no longer on baseball.

Takahashi, whose family members and friends survived the earthquake and tsunami, has been watching television virtually all evening, every night, as the drama from Japan unfolds on various news networks.

"When I heard the news and saw the videos, I was shocked, surprised, I couldn't believe it," Takahashi said."Seeing all the footage, you get a little numb, but it's a real thing. I have to keep my eye on the tragedy, but I also have to play baseball here."

Takahashi said he is planning to organize some kind of fundraiser, perhaps involving his teammates, to aid victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

"I have to do something for them," he said."I send my condolences to all the people in Japan and hope things get better soon. We need some kind of good news from there."

Local hockey players making their mark at all levels | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Noteworthy achievements by California hockey players just keep on coming.

In 2007, Jonathon Blum of Rancho Santa Margarita became the first California-born-and-trained player to be chosen in the first round of the NHL entry draft when the Nashville Predators selected him 23rd. Last year’s draft was the first in which two Californians were chosen in the first round: Beau Bennett of Gardena was taken by Pittsburgh with the 20th pick and Emerson Etem of Long Beach was taken 29th by the Ducks.

This past weekend Californians recorded another commendable feat when College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita won the American Collegiate Hockey Assn. men’s Division 3 tournament in Holland, Mich.

According to Kevin Hopkins, father of Cougars forward Todd Hopkins, most of the players on the roster are from the Santa Clarita Valley and played for local youth hockey organizations, including the L.A. Junior Kings program.

The Cougars, coached by John Taferner and Andrew McDonald, were 26-0 this season. They played five games in four days to win the title, including a 5-3 victory over Hope College of Holland, Mich., in the title game.

Congrats to them and everyone who’s playing for the fun of it and isn’t necessarily on the same track as Blum, Bennett and Etem.

I had a nice chat with Blum, whose family had Ducks season tickets when he was younger, though he said he and his dad were Kings fans and his mother and sister were Ducks fans. Some of it appears in myweekly NHL column, but here are some other tidbits.

Blum almost stumbled into hockey and to his surprise found that he was good at it.

“There’s no hockey blood in my family. It was just something I did when I was younger,” he said. “I had rollerblades and some beat-up sticks and just played in front of my yard in the cul-de-sac and played with my brother.

“Then I went to a public skate for a birthday party at an ice rink and that’s how I transferred to ice. I really loved being on the ice instead of roller hockey. Then I got enrolled in the minor hockey program in Aliso Viejo and joined the California Wave and played eight years there.”

Playing hockey in Southern California usually means scrambling for ice time. He started playing in Aliso Viejo but also played in Westminster and Lakewood“and wherever else we’d end up,” he said. “It’s so expensive nowadays. You’ve got to be pretty fortunate to be able to make a team and be able to handle the cost in Southern California, especially traveling the way you have to here. I remember playing out of country, out of state three or four times a year, Michigan, Chicago, Quebec, Toronto, just to play a tournament and just to get exposed to the competition.”

When he and his teammates would face teams from traditional hockey areas they’d inevitably face skepticism about their abilities. And even Blum acknowledged he never thought hockey would be his future, yet he’s thriving with the Predators.

“You’d go up to Canada and play in tournaments and they’d be all over you about it. We ended up winning tournaments and pretty much shutting them up and making California, putting it on the map for hockey,” he said.

“You don’t hear it so much now. You do see guys playing in the NHL and getting drafted high. Give it five, six, seven more years and you’ll probably see six to 12 guys in the NHL from California.”

Predators General Manager David Poile said he looks less at where a player is from than where that player is headed. The Predators have another rookie from an unusual background: winger Blake Geoffrion grew up in a suburb of Nashville. However, he has a hockey background through his great-grandfather Howie Morenz, grandfather Bernard“Boom Boom” Geoffrion, and his father, Danny, a former NHL player.

Poile, who has to draft carefully while operating a small-market team that can’t sign marquee free agents, said Blum’s smarts and overall potential were the most important factors to the Predators.

“We in the hockey business realize that California is starting to heat up in terms of being a recruiting area for colleges and major junior. It doesn’t really matter where a player is from,” Poile said.

“I think it’s kind of neat that he’s from California, the same as Blake Geoffrion being from Brentwood, Tenn. It’s all about looking for hockey players and I think it’s a great story for him, for us and for California.

“Last year the Ducks drafted Etem. We’ll go anywhere to find players.”

Blum, who was recalled from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League last month and made his NHL debut Feb. 22, is fortunate to have among his teammates Shea Weber and Ryan Suter, two of the NHL’s elite defensemen and members of the Canadian and U.S. Olympic teams, respectively, at last year’s Vancouver Games. Watching and learning from them is giving him a priceless education.

“I think it’s made all the difference. Nashville does a really great job of developing defensemen if you look at their track record,” Blum said. “I think spending a year and a bit in the minors helped my development and made me ready.

“I try and model my game like Ryan Suter’s. We’re pretty much the same size and both smart players. I look at his tendencies and the way he handles guys in corners and different situations and I try to pattern my game after him. It’s nice to be able to talk to him about stuff.”

Poile said Blum, who’s 6-foot-1 and about 190 pounds, is “a real smart player. Size has always been a little bit of an issue. Not so much height as weight. But he’s strong for his size and his hockey sense is excellent and I think he’s off to a real good start for us.”

And the contributions from Californians will just keep coming.

USC basketball: More on the fourth-seeded Trojans' 70-56 win over fifth-seeded California | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Usc1_350My game story from fourth-seeded USC's 70-56 win over fifth-seeded California in Thursday's quarterfinal round of the Pacific Life Pacific 10 Conference Tournament at Staples Centerhas already been posted.

But since this is the Internet, I am allowed practically infinite room to expound upon any USC basketball-related idea, and I thought I'd use this opportunity to delve into a few factors that keyed USC's decisive win that advances it to Friday's semifinal round against top-seeded Arizona.

The inside game

USC junior forwardNikola Vucevicwas saddled with foul trouble, so he didn't factor in much, or at least as much as usual. He only played 27 minutes and scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds.

But it wasn't as if his absence against California was something new for USC.

Remember, Vucevic got hammered in the jaw when these teams met in the Galen Center this season, and he was ineffective in that one, too, scoring only six points in 32 minutes in USC's eventual 68-66 loss.

In this one, here's how Vucevic explained why Cal's defense was so effective:

"They came and double-teamed me late and I couldn’t do my moves and I didn’t have a lot of space to do my moves," he said."I was frustrated because I wanted to be on the floor and help my team, but at the end of the day we won and that’s all that matters, so I don’t care what I do."

With him out, the guy who more than stepped up was USC senior forwardAlex Stepheson, whom California CoachMike Montgomerylater deemed a"monster" after the 6-foot-10, 250-pound former North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake star scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high tying 16 rebounds.

"Alex has played huge minutes all year, none huger than tonight," USC CoachKevin O'Neillsaid."He anchored our whole team tonight at different times offensively and defensively."

USC is 11-1 when Stepheson posts a double-double this season, a trend he was first told about Tuesday afternoon by yours truly. After his game Thursday, Stepehson said,"I just wanted to be aggressive and go get that double-double after being told that."

As for why he's so effective in that role, it harkens back to his aggressive style of rebounding that fires up the team. If you watch him dunk, he looks impressive doing it.

"That's the key for us," senior guardDonte Smithsaid."We get all the momentum with them big dunks."

And Stepheson had three dunks Thursday, which comprised half of his six-for-nine effort from the floor.

Alvarez vs. Hatton: Saul Alvarez defeats Matthew Hatton by unanimous decision | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

Alvarez-hatton1_450

It was entertaining. It was, at times, brutal. But in the end there was no doubt who was the better boxer.

Saul Alvarezused his size and confident style to win a unanimous decision over a gameMatthew Hattonto win the WBC super lightweight title at Honda Center.

The fight, broadcast nationally on HBO, was worth the admission price on Saturday night as both fighters seemed to give most of what they had.

All three judges scored it 119-108.

Alvarez entered the match as the fighter with the biggest upside in the Golden Boy camp, having been unbeaten in 36 fights. The partisan, heavily Latino crowd did little to hide their adoration, feeling the need to get a win after Daniel Ponce de Leon lost a unanimous decision to Adrien Broner in the fight preceding the  main event.

For Hatton it was clearly going to be a fatter payday after Alvarez failed to make weight. There was never any doubt the fight would be staged. Instead, these kind of transgressions can be forgiven with money and Hatton was more than obliged to enter the ring.

Hatton came out swinging -- but not necessarily connecting -- in the opening round. Alvarez was content to stay back.

Alvarez bloodied Hatton’s nose in the second round as the fighter from Manchester, England, had to be wondering if the extra money was worth the potential beating he might take.

Hatton wasn’t defenseless, managing to get a few flurries off but he was clearly on the receiving end of meaningful punches more than giving them.

Ducks rally for 4-3 overtime win over Dallas | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

When all seemed lost Friday night for the Ducks, defensemanLubomir Visnovskystepped up and kept their winning streak and their playoff hopes alive.

Visnovsky completed the first hat trick by a Ducks defenseman in club history by scoring during an overtime power play, ripping a long shot pastKari LehtonenafterRyan Getzlafhad won an offensive-zone faceoff, to give the Ducks an improbable 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars before a sparse crowd of 12,883 at Honda Center.

The Ducks had pulled even with 63 seconds left in the third period and goaltenderDan Ellispulled for an extra attacker.Teemu Selanne's400th goal as a Duck, set up on a short pass from Getzlaf, got the game to overtime and assured the Ducks of at least a point. Ellis made a fine glove save onTrevor Daleylate in sudden-death play to keep the Ducks' comeback hopes alive.

Visnovsky had an assist on that goal. He had scored in the first period and again on a one-timer during a power play in the third period. His third goal came with 3.8 seconds left in overtime.

Still struggling to get by without All-Star goaltenderJonas Hiller, who is recovering from a bout with vertigo, the Ducks have nonetheless won three straight games.

The Ducks had scored first, at 9:22 of the first period, after a scrum and minor outbreak of hostilities left the teams skating four on four.

WingersDan SextonandBobby Ryanworked the puck well along the boards in Dallas’ zone before Ryan fed to Visnovsky in the middle. Visnovsky unleashed one of his typically blistering shots from about 35 feet, and with Sexton crossing in front of Lehtonen the Stars netminder had no chance to stop it.

The Stars were energized in the second period, taking control of the tempo and the game as they took the final nine shots of the period. They scored three straight goals to build a 3-1 lead, a challenge for the Ducks because they hadn’t scored more than three goals in any of their previous six games.

Dallas pulled even early in the middle period on a slick give-and-go betweenJamie Bennand recently acquired defensemanAlex Goligoski. Benn dropped the puck for Goligoski, then headed to the net. That put him in perfect position when Goligoski returned the pass, and he quickly redirected it past Ellis at 2:23.

The Stars went end-to-end for their second goal.Adam Burishwon a faceoff from Getzlaf in Dallas’ zone and the Stars quickly turned up ice.Jason Williamscarried the puck up the right side and passed it through Ducks defensemanFrancois Beauchemin to Burish, who flicked it past Ellis at 11:35.

The Ducks took two penalties late in the period and paid for it when Dallas took a 3-1 lead at 18:37.Mike Ribeiropassed the puck toStephane Robidas, whose long shot was deflected byLoui Erikssonin the slot.

Visnovsky cut Dallas' lead to 3-2 at 5:26 of the third period, after Getzlaf won the puck along the boards and passed it to Selanne, who in turn fed Visnovsky for a blast from the right side.

The Huskies were doing a lot of missing during a first half in which they shot only 21.2% and trail the Bruins, 25-24, at halftime.

Smith, the native of nearby Kent, Wash., who spurned Washington for UCLA, had four points and nine rebounds before picking up his second foul late in the first half and going to the bench. Huskies fans unleashed boos when the freshman center first entered the game with 16 minutes 51 seconds left in the half.

Sophomore forwardReeves Nelsonhas 10 points and five rebounds for the Bruins, who shot 37% during a back-and-forth half in which neither team led by more than four points. Clippers: Rockets' hot shooting from deep gives them 54-49 halftime lead over Clippers | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

The Rockets are spoiling the home debut of newly acquired Clippers guard Mo Williamsand the return of guardEric Gordonwith lights-out shooting from three-point range.

Williams' first highlight came with 5:13 left in the second quarter when he tipped away aLuis Scolapass, then kept the ball from going out of bounds by flipping it up into the air, where Clippers centerDeAndre Jordancaught it and gave it back to Williams, who then threw an alley-oop back to Jordan.

Jordan was standing behind Rockets centerBrad Miller on the other side of the basket, but he jumped high with his right hand extended and dunked over Miller to bring the crowd to its feet and the Clippers to within five points.

The Rockets went on a 13-0 run following his technical, six of those points coming on consecutive three-point jumpers from guardGoran Dragic, recently acquired by Houston in a trade with Phoenix.

Oh, and as for Gordon, who is playing in his first game since injuring his left wrist Jan. 22, he isn't showing much rust. He has scored 11 points on four-for-nine shooting from the field while playing with a black, heavily cushioned brace on that left wrist. He scored the Clippers' first five points.

Clippers centerChris Kamanhas nine points and five rebounds off the bench.

GuardKyle Lowryleads Houston with 14 points. GuardCourtney Leehas added 12 on five-for-seven shooting.

Which centers deserve to be in a Lakers Hall of Fame? | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times

If the Lakers had their own Hall of Fame, which players would you select for induction? That is the basis for our next series of polls, in which we ask our readers to vote on who is most worthy of this honor. We will break down the history of the team by position, nominating those who spent at least three seasons with the team as a starter and played well in their tenure with the Lakers.

Only consider what they did with the Lakers. So, don't be upset that Karl Malone isn't a nominee: Obviously, Malone is a Hall of Famer, but he was only on the Lakers one season and would not be aLakersHall of Famer.

We start with the centers. To make the Hall of Fame, players must be named on 75% of the ballots. Before the ballot, there are links to each player's bio and stats on our newAll Things Lakersdatabase.

Last time, you voted for guards. You can see the full resultshere, but only three guards earned 75% of your vote: Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and Jerry West.

The nominees at center:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Wilt Chamberlain

Vlade Divac

Leroy Ellis

Darrall Imhoff

Jim Krebs

George Mikan

Shaquille O'Neal
